WELCOME TO MY BLOG-Sherry Johnston, Biggest Loser!
Being a contestant on NBC’s The Biggest Loser, I’m often asked questions about the show and about my new healthy lifestyle. So I thought a blog would be a great place to continue sharing what I’ve learned and what I’m continuing to learn about living a healthy life to the fullest!
Life started a new direction when I heard the words: “you are the cast of Season 9 of The Biggest Loser!” My daughter, Ashley, asked me to try out with her but I didn’t think I was “big enough”! I did it for her. But something happened along the way – I found myself! Ever felt lost? Especially when life doesn’t go as you planned. For me, it was the loss of Ken, my beloved husband of 18 years after a 28 month battle with melanoma cancer. My dreams, plans and hopes seemed to be lost as well… I didn’t “do well”… And I didn’t take care of myself.
The Biggest Loser was a re-awaking of my life at 51 years old. Isn’t it amazing what God can use to change your life? I had no desire to go on National television in a sports bra and shorts weighing in at 218 pounds! Like I said, I went to help Ashley who also followed my lead no “self-care” and began at 374 pounds at 27 years old.
Then it happened – the 5 words that changed us, “But What If YOU CAN”. After the first workout with Jillian Michaels and Bob Harper, Ashley felt discouraged thinking she could not do this, she arrived thinking she could, thought she was ready and stronger, but now doubting herself. I can’t do this, I can’t… She struggled…
Ever had one of those “God moments” when you say something that you know had to come from God because you couldn’t have thought it on your own! I had one of those! I looked at her and said, “But What If YOU CAN?” What if you go in the gym and YOU CAN do it?” It had not crossed her mind – she could only see she couldn’t. We both began to change to a YOU CAN attitude you know from Philipians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”. We could overcome hardships, we could overcome the weight, and we could succeed! And we did! We still are and YOU CAN too!
This blog is about Fitness, Faith and Fun! In that, I want to share about areas I feel helped provide the success I had from the show and how you can be successful too not just in weight loss but in your life. Here are some main areas:
- Medical – This is where you must start. You have to know where you are! Dr. Huizinga (Dr. H as everyone calls him) did major testing on all of us before we ever stepped foot on The Ranch!
- Sleep – Do you know the importance in good quality sleep? It’s vital to everything else you do! Do you know what OSA is?
- Exercise – To be healthy, you have to move!
- Nutrition – Getting back to the basics fruits & veges, proteins, and complex carbs….
- Emotional/Spiritual – you have to be willing to do the hard work, that of the heart!
I’ll be posting at least once a week on Tuesdays, and when The Biggest Loser, Season 14 begins in January, you know we’ll talk about that too!
